Information - Batterie Moltke.
Batterie Moltke was originally built as one of the five intended naval coastal artillery batteries to be manned by Kriegsmarine but was handed over to the army to defend St Ouens Bay in the event of an attack by the allies.
Under the control of Organisation Todt, the batterie was constructed using Spanish, Russian and Ukranian slave workers from the nearby Lagers Molders camp.
On 19th August the HMS Onslaught was observed patrolling off the Channel Islands and four coastal batteries opened fire, the two main batteries being Moltke and Roon. It was during this engagement that a shell detonated prematurely killing a member of crew and injuring five others at Batterie Roon.
The remains of that gun are now lying in a gun emplacement at Batterie Moltke. Is that crew member attached to the weapon that killed him? Are they his footsteps often heard by volunteers and visitors to the bunker?
Why is there a "creepy" feeling of constantly being watched?
